Yesterday I shared the Highlands from the drone. Today are the photos of the Highlands from the ground. Landmannalaugar was my destination in Iceland’s Fjallabak Nature Reserve. Landmannalaugar is a spot next to an eruption site from approximately 1477 that formed the lava field. Only accessible by 4×4, I had a Suzuki Jimny. I would buy one of those today if they were available in the States. A two-seater 4×4, manual transmission, I had a blast with it. To get to the last part, you actually need to cross a river with your truck. I chose to park and walk across – walking back on the narrowest of footbridges, and I ran into a friend I traveled to Cuba with. It was insane. She was walking in, I was walking out, she started calling my name, and I completely ignored her because… well, I am in Iceland. We had not seen each other since we left Cuba in 2017, and in the middle of nowhere, there she was.

After the drone photos earlier in the day, the rain came in, and it poured. So rain geared up, and I hiked the lava field with only one camera. The trail is part of a much larger 6-day, 47-mile hiking trail that is ranked as one of the best hikes in the world by National Geographic. I was fine with my couple-hour hike, though if I were ever to do long hikes again, this would be at the top of the list. I am more likely to figure a way to smuggle a Jimny into the country, though – I looked it up, Mexico is the answer.

The greens were the most impressive part, I have a new favorite color, and that green is it. Felt like a movie set. Other photos from this series are of the ride into the Highlands. In February 2024, I hope to hold a Photo Adnveture with Hunt Photo in Iceland for Frozen waterfalls and lagoons, beautiful ice caves, glaciers, and the fantastic Aurora Borealis. With an Icelandic guide, I will be there to assist you with the camera. It is an incredible opportunity full of fanatic photo opportunities. I have been there in the winter, and it is like nothing you have experienced. More photos from this trip (as I finish them) and previous Iceland trips, including my 2020 Winter trip call, can be found by clicking here. I would love to follow that trip up with a summer adventure to the Highlands. If you have any interest, drop me a note.
