Frozen Bubbles
January 3, 2014

If you are from this area you know we are stuck in freezing temperatures. It is like negative 89 degrees outside right now. Cold enough that bubbles freeze. There is a photo blog floating around where someone photographed bubbles in the snow. It was pretty cool, It’s been on my shot list since last summer. I never knew if it would work, they made it sound easy.  So I figured today would be a great day to try.  Actually, my daughter and I tried last night at 11pm to make sure. There we were, on our hands and knees blowing bubbles towards the ground out the back door, freezing to death.  It worked, once, but that was enough.  The plan was today at sunset, but plans do not always work the way you want.  I could not find snow pants so I could lie in the snow, the wind had not died down enough and since I wasted time looking for snow pants the sun was lower than I had hoped for, I had about 5 minutes of good light. I had to accept that large bubbles would not work, only small bubbles could make it in the wind. I used a table and as they landed I would move the table into the rays of light.  5 minutes later, I am soaked from kneeling in snow and covered in sticky bubble solution.  I will try again, though I got better shots than I thought I did when  took them. I would love to get some larger bubbles to freeze and use better light.  I think early morning might work better, less wind warm light.
