It is not often I see a show in a club and don’t have my camera. I am kind of spoiled, to be honest, always up close and working. I should have requested a photo pass, but this was a family outing. We took the kids to see The Struts last night at Hampton Beach Casino – it is fun having kids over 18. I got over the itch of not being in the pit with my lens pretty quick. It was obvious this was going to be an incredible show, even the band pointed it out a few times. Last summer, my son and I saw Foo Fighters at Fenway. We left that show talking about the opening act, The Struts. I love the Foo Fighters, but The Struts just seemed to come out of nowhere. Its been just over a year, I can say they are my son’s favorite band, he even covers a few of their songs when he plays out. We have brought aboard Mom as a fan, and I think Anna was already there. We tend to all love music of all types, hell last week the four of us were just as excited to be at Hamilton. We got there a little early, walked around the boardwalk and there in front of the Casino was Luke Spiller – he would be the young man in the photo with the microphone, the lead singer. I have heard him described as the best parts of Bowie, Mercury, and Jagger rolled into one. All I can say is he was very nice for the moments we had with him, and during the show, he comes across as genuinely excited to be on the stage as we are to see him. He was just standing there, no mob, no line, I am sure many people thought he was a fan waiting for the show, we got to chat for a second and snap some photos. All I could do on the ride home was try to find one I have seen that was comparable and I come up blank. It was a band that is bigger than the room they played in, with a crowd that was high energy and loved being, there combined with a catalog that is just pure rock with every person in the room knowing every lyric. You could put these guys with the huge rock bands of the ’70s and ’80s, and they would be right at home. I imagine if I get to see them a third time, it will be in a much larger space, a space worthy of them, with even more people and higher ticket prices. Until then this was the perfect show even without a camera.
