Day Twelve, nearing the end. St. Louis was the last stop in the “Middle” and it did not disappoint.
One of my favorite stops came from an unplanned suggestion. I recorded a podcast episode in St. Louis for another project I am doing called “Contact Sheet,” where I interview photographers as we take photos. There is a lot more to it than that, and it will all be shared later as I am compiling them now. One of those episodes was recorded with Dave Carson, a Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer in St. Louis who happens to have gone to high school with me. During our texts about meeting up, he asked if I would be heading to STL Vintage Camera. It was not on my radar, but the name alone meant I had to work it into the schedule.
I was there for a while, talking to Andy, David, and Ann about cameras, my trip, and the state of photography. I bought some old photography books, an old camera for the museum, and some fresh film.
The best part was seeing them work with the constant stream of customers coming in with film or buying old used equipment. I watched them teach people how to load rolls and use the gear. What struck me most was that it was entirely younger people enjoying and wanting to learn about film. It was a great stop towards the end of the journey, which is funny when I still have one more post to go that will have a completely different feel in comparison.
If you get to St. Louis and like cameras or just antiques, I highly recommend you stop by. You can find them at 3400 Cherokee St., inside The Bricoleur antique store.
Day Twelve.
