No matter what you think about snow, you have to smile when your 7 month old Bernese Mountain Dog, who is bred for cold weather, discovers snow for the first time. Pure innocence and joy. He just sat there and watched it come down, put his tongue out to catch some, then watched it fall more. Then his sister came out and showed him how fun it is to run and jump in… we will never get him back in the house again.

the dailypic 3221 yr9 299 Argus at 4 Months
Argus is just over four months old. Over 45lbs, 8lbs in the last ten days. Josie was 37lbs at the same age, but she was taller. Argus is a tank, lower to the ground, just a solid, fluffy smile with legs. The two of them are very close but so different. I would have always said Josie was the sweetest dog I had ever met, until Argus. He is a force, loud, and adventurous. I think we will keep him, at least until he does not fit through the door anymore.

Two years back I posted a photo of Josie’s eye, seven years back I posted one of Parker, our previous dog. So it seemed like a good day to do this shot. Unless you are Argus, who wanted nothing to do with it. The other two I was able to get a beautiful reflection, Argus, this is what I got, it is on his terms, so the light did not work the way I wanted. I will try some other time again. In the other two, you can see me, in this one all I see is the devil, a cute devil, but still…

the dailypic 3172 yr9 250 Argus at 11 Weeks
Argus at 11 weeks, height, weight, bigger… 11 weeks today, 3 weeks home… not his best day. Or maybe it is, depends how you are measuring them. Pissed at the door on the way out to piss because I could not find a right sandal. See we have to hide all the shoes because he will eat them. I could not find any right sandals, so I had to wear 2 lefts sandals. Pissed while I was stupidly wearing the wrong footwear. Ate Josie’s food, but that is not new, that is a daily thing. Dug a huge hole, I think, to be honest I missed it, I tried to live my life for a moment or two and came back and there is a crater where there once was a mulch garden. Neither dog showed signs of being the guilty party, I even checked paws looking for evidence. I filled the hole, still wearing two left sandals and let it slide as a mumbled profanities and words that might had rhymed with “cupid steeple bet shoe bogs”. All seems calm, I went in to talk to Dan… went back out the hole was back, like a sequel, bigger and better than before. And this time he was proud enough to make sure I knew it was him. Covered in dirt, smiling ear to f’n ear, while the big dog stared at me with a tone that screamed “want to check my paws again left feet?” What else, oh yeah, he gave the big dog a black eye, well not a black eye like humans get but a scratch next to her eye that is swelled up and pink, she looks like she was punched, I am sure dog DSS will be here soon to interview her. No one is going to believe my word over that of cute little Argus… so I got that to look forward to. Broke the stone wall, have no idea how he did that, but he did, I need to fix that. Apparently 11 weeks in dog years is equivalent to a teenager on crack. Good thing he is cute.

Argus is ten weeks old today, two weeks as part of the family. He is taller than he was, he is heavier than he was. Picture a furry ham on feet waddling around, tripping face first now and then. He is a klutz, he smiles all the time, he loves Josie, he is way more adventurous than she is. He is obsessed with getting under things, which is funny since by the time I finish this sentence he will not fit under anything. He wears a Tile Tracker on his collar (square that helps you find things) since I list him in the backyard once, still have no idea where he was, he just appeared, but now I can make him play music to find him. I am pretty sure you can see him grow if you watch long enough.

These two. Five days in and they are best friends. Josie was cautious (flat out not wanting any part of it) at the first meeting. The drive home was awkward; you ever sat next to a 95lbs dog in the front seat which is giving you the cold shoulder for 90 minutes. I have. Day two was better, but you could still tell she was wondering when he was going to leave. Flash to today, they are inseparable, even when they need to be. I think all we have done is gotten our dog, her own dog.

There is a list in my kitchen of possible names for the new pup. Radar, Wilbur, Basil Fawlty, Finnegan, Toby Flenderson, Grizzly Adams, Vedder, Weegee, Quinn, David Bowie, Andre, Elvis, Fezzik, are just some on the board. At some point, Dan added Gus. Now Josie’s full name is Josephina Smalls the Great, so we had spice up ‘Gus’ if it was to be used to keep the grand gesture. Prince was considered, Prince Gustofer Fezzik the Giant, Prince seemed too much so it was changed to Sir, Gustofer – which we might have made up- was changed to Argus. Argus is when it all came together. Argus is a camera. One of which I have proudly displayed in my house, it was my Grandfather’s camera, an Argus C3 Range Finder from the 50’s. Dan gets to keep his first choice of Gus, I get to tie it to photography, and a prop for a puppy photo shoot is set. So today, Argus and the Argus went to the studio for some shots. Like his sister, he is a natural poser, when he is not falling off the box backward. Here we have Sir Argus Fezzik the Giant, weighing in just over 15lbs at 8.5 weeks old and his namesake, Gramp’s 60+ year-old camera, nicknamed The Brick, weighing in at 1.6lbs.
