When Cometh… The Commuter! The Amazing Spider-Man #267, published August 1985. It is not a secret I collect comics. I have ever since the day I convinced my mother to buy me this book. I had comics prior to this one, but this is the issue that I kept and took care of.  This is the issue that was read over and over again, and then kept on top of the dresser not on the floor with everything else I owned.

I loved this story, Spider-Man breaks up a robbery, the burglar jumps on to a train out of the city but not before Spider-Man tossed a spider tracer on him. Long story short, he tracks the guy to his house in the suburbs, I believe Scarsdale. There are no buildings to swing from there. So Spider-Man ends up walking around, tagging along on a garbage truck, he takes a cab… I thought it was hilarious. I wished Spider-Man would come walking down my street when I was a kid.  There was no super villain, no space adventure, just a guy in a spandex costume taking the time to track down a common thief.

I read the issue while my mother shopped at Fernandes Supermarket in Medway. I am sure there was a conversation about buying the issue even though I had already finished it, but I somehow got the 65 cents from her and it went home. Each time picking up on a different line or the way something was drawn. It made a huge impression on me at 12.

It is out so I can take it to a comic book show this weekend. I normally don’t go to shows.  It has been a few years but my son, who is the same age I was the first time I read this issue, and I will be heading to the Super Mega Fest this Saturday, with the goal of getting Stan Lee, that’s right, Stan “The Man” Lee to sign this very book. I am sure I have other things that might be more worthy as a collector to have autographed, but this one just seems right.
