Starting the posting of the missing days from the dailypic. The trip started on Thursday, June 18th. It was a 98% driving day. I did just under 1000 miles. I landed in Hammond, Illinois, that night – at what might have been the dirtiest hotel I stayed at. Would not recommend.
The day before, I had the idea of dropping off pinhole cameras on the trip and picking them up on the way back. I had two old soda cans I had used before, so I loaded them up on Wednesday and brought them along. I found a spot in Ohio that I would pass by on the way out and back, so I could pick them up. 371 Creek Rd, Conneaut, OH – a covered bridge over the West branch of the Conneaut Creek. I hid one in a fallen tree and one in a bush near the water. Took some photos of the bridge itself with a modern camera – the only photos taken on day 1 and went on my way.
I made the trek to grab them on the way back. I would say it was a failure. One had fallen, and the other was blocked from the light, making a decent photo impossible. Not that pinholes are ever award winning but I would have hoped for a better shape from the light, or the sun trails. There is a photo from the bridge, with circles indicating where the cans were hidden. The one on the left got me the only image. I added the final photo that worked below: the black-and-white that looks like a Rorschach test. You’ve got to stare at it a bit, but under the bright spot, you can make out the line of the bridge roof and the supports underneath. It was just a piece of black and white photo paper in a soda can with a pinhole. Not everything has to be a success to be shared; this was not the only failure on the trip.
Day 1.
