It’s just past 10:30 p.m., and I’m still in the barn — working, surrounded by a couple hundred cameras staring back at me. I haven’t touched one all day, which feels strange, especially this time of year, but today was all about the edits.
I have some additions, both new and old, to the collection that are ready to go — one in particular, generously gifted to me last week, that will be a favorite the second I load it with a roll of film. A pure treasure of a camera that I won’t dare use until I have the attention span. Another — brand new, sealed in its box — waits for when I can give it the time it also deserves, punishment for arriving earlier than expected. And somewhere between here and Texas, another will soon return home after an 8-month tune-up. Each of them calling me.
It gets me thinking. According to my counter, since September 1st, I’ve taken 77,895 photos — schools, weddings, sports, daycares, everything in between. Though not many for myself. I really think Ireland is the last time I took a series of photos purely for me, and I haven’t looked at them since I got back in August. They also demand time, still waiting to be processed, along with Romania.
That’s okay. The season of slow is coming, and I’m ready for it. All the cameras, all my photos, new projects, quiet moments — it will all get time. And it will be appreciated more than any other year, knowing the work I did to get here.
Until then.
