I took a boat to Machias-Seal Island about 10 miles off the coast of Maine today. Adding to my theory, all the best stuff is located on islands. Iceland, Cuba, now Machias-Seal Island. This one is much smaller, only 20 acres, and the population is birds. Thousands of birds… Puffins everywhere! The photography group I am working with this week enjoyed this opportunity. We boarded a small boat in Cutler Bay, Maine, and took an hour to get to the island. I took an even smaller boat to get to shore, which is an adventure on its own, thanks to crazy tides in this area. Hiked single file to bird bluffs while holding sticks over our heads to distract the other birds who were not crazy about us being near their offspring. Then shut in the small blinds in groups of four – in the picture above, the gray building in the back is one of the blinds and given an hour to get photos. I will do another post on this when I get back, but for now, I will say it is high on the list of incredible experiences my camera and I have had, and it can only get better because I get to do it again tomorrow!
