This Sunday, September 9th will be the 10th annual Alex Handy 5k. The Medway Secondary Parent Teacher Organization (MSPTO) took over Project Alex earlier this year – the charity that ran the race for the past nine years and hopes to continue the 5k going forward. The event and charity honor Alex Handy of Medway, a 13-year-old who was struck and killed while crossing Rte. 109 in 2006. Around town you may have seen the flashing crosswalk signs, I have one just outside my studio on Village St, and the crosswalks painted blue with the words Project Alex on them. Project Alex has raised over $250,000 since it started. In addition to sponsoring the signs and blue crosswalks, Project Alex promotes safety by giving away bike helmets and offers scholarships to local students. You can join the 5k on their website alexhandy5k.racewire.com. It is a great event for an important cause in our community. There are raffles, (you can even win a timricephoto print), giveaways, a prize of a free bike, awards for racers and face painting. The event starts at the VFW on Holliston St. Medway at 8 am.
