My project, so my rules, so I get to break them now and then. Today’s “dailypic” is twenty years old – I think. I believe this was the summer of 2002. Anna would have been almost three, and Dan would be just over one. I would have been twenty-seven with hair. I love this photo. I randomly came across it today and posted it this morning on Facebook for fun, and with every notification, I got to smile because I saw the photo again and again.
I had no cell phone with a camera when this was taken. It was taken on an old Minolta film camera I always carried. For this shot, my wife is behind it. Not a ton of photos with me and the kids when they were little. One of the hazards of being a photographer. But looking at this shot, I know the smell of the air, I know the circumstances that led to them both being in my arms, I know the time of the day, the tide of the canal, and what it felt like to hold them both at the same time – something I did not know at that time I could miss. I could make this photo clearer, fix the color, I could tint my teeth, I could get rid of the grain, I could edit out the stray hairs, remove my brother from searching behind us, get more detail in the bridge, but in doing so, it would ruin the perfect photo.
Photos are important, and even I need to be reminded now and then just how much.
