I was raised in Medway and as a kid was fascinated with all history, especially that of my town. I have written here before on the importance of the book Medway The New Grant by Francis Donovan. I would sit in the library and read his book over and over. I was studying the photos, picturing where the buildings described would have been. Fascinated by the places that are no longer here, or changed so much they were hard to recognize. Donovan’s book inspired my We Are Medway photo project with the goal one day to have a book of my photos looked upon as his book was by me. Well, this week, I took another step to appreciate my town’s history. I am now on the board of directors of the Medway Historical Society. The Historical Society was founded in 1902 and are the caretakers of Medway’s past. There is a museum on Main Street full of photos, paintings, letters, dolls, clothing, signs and more. A board of incredible people passionate and knowledgeable about this town and the people who have made it what it is today.
The Board is:
Sheila Dubrawski, President
Cher Hamilton, Vice President
Terry Armstrong, Secretary
Cathie Perkins, Treasurer
Joe Dziczek, Curator
Stephen Malloy
Chuck Waldron
Deborah Eastman
Tim Rice
I joined to not only assist in any way I can but to learn more myself. I hope to offer my photography and what I capture now as future history, while also to help bring the Medway Historical Society to more people. I will be running the social media, beginning with the Facebook Page where I will be sharing photos I take in the museum, old pictures of the town and events that people can join to get to know the group and the history of our area, give us a “like”. As for the typewriter above, that is Francis Donovan’s. He used it to write his books, including the one I would sit and read. Today I toured the museum and took some photos, plenty to start sharing soon, but it feels right the first one I share is this one.
