The family went to see The Martian today, I loved it. It made me nostalgic, even angry, for a time that is gone. Do you remember that feeling we had for the space program? Exploration? Discovery? Apollo, Shuttles, even the Mars Rovers. Is it me? Or is it missing now, gone from our culture? Without that sense of opportunity, it feels we have turned inward and become jaded. Everything is divided, seems everyone has taken a side and there is nothing but space (the other space) in the middle. My Facebook feed is full of noise, against something, for something, politics, guns, power plants, war. Everyone’s opinion is right, everyone else is wrong. You try to show logic or tolerance, it does not matter. Only the side matters. You try to have a true debate, it does not matter. Only the side matters. While in the movie, I felt that uniting feeling from when I was younger – I missed it the second the lights came on. I am sure the science can be challenged, I have heard those tear holes in the plot, but still I was jealous of the unity portrayed in the film. We don’t need to leave a man on Mars, we don’t need a tragedy, hell we don’t even need a kid in a well to get those feelings back, but I challenge a common goal might do us good. I miss when it was that crazy uncle claiming the Moon landing was staged was the hardest argument to stomach. What if we all moved from our sides, meet in the middle and look up to the stars in awe of the unknown and unbiased.
