A Diner
February 19, 2013

This is where I ate tonight. Some of you know my wife has taken a vacation with her family and then my children are spending a few nights with my parents. So it is me, the dog and I think the cat is still here somewhere. Anyway, I met a friend for dinner at the diner.

Three years ago my wife went away (yes I know- we allow here to leave every three years, it is in the contract) and back then the kids were younger and it was not vacation week so we had to function on our own. Before this blog existed I wrote about each day an d posted it for her to read. Sort of a status update. I dug it up and thought I would share at least day 1 of Seven Days without a Wife. Here you go…

Seven Days Without a Wife: Day 1 – February 5, 200910:30am – Woke up to snow, ice and school delays. Giant pain in the a**. Kids were good, got themselves together, ready for the day. School was delayed 2 hours, seemed easy enough, yet there were slight arguments over when the bus would come… everyone had a different idea. Honestly they each made points that had me doubting the bus would come exactly 2 hours later than normal. In the end all was well, they left me alone while I worked, got them on the bus now back to the job. Noticed a few bowls in the dishwasher…dirty… weird.

3:45pm – The kids came home… the boy asked where mom is. I explained to him “sometimes no matter how much you love someone, they leave.” He started to look sad, so I walked away, eventually he seemed OK with it, doubt he will ask again. He went to play the Wii. Anna is doing home work; I need to finish up this project on the computer. I knew this week would be easy.

10:45pm – So the first day is done. Kids were fed, entertained and sent to bed. We successfully got homework done, went to dance class, ran some errands and ate dinner. Homework was not an big issue, they did it right away, the only thing I had to do was separate them, Danny was distracting Anna. Strangely, Danny kept ‘almost’ poking himself in the eye with his pencil. Seems like a no-brainer to me, keep the pencil away from the face? But I had to tell him not to poke himself in the eye about 5 times, wonder if this is something Barbara tells him on a regular basis?

As for dinner, apparently I was not supposed to stray from the menu. Yes, the wife left me a menu, this is not unusual though, we have a weekly menu she makes before she shops and follows it each night. I did not feel like the pizza tonight, I made pasta. “But Mommy made a menu!” Pasta was on the menu for tomorrow night, it will be fine. You would have thought I committed a crime. And then… I did not make it like Mommy, apparently she makes it better! It’s pasta, and sauce, I even used the recipe on the ziti box, looks like it was some chef’s personal recipe Al Dente (French guy?) anyway this Al gave instructions, maybe she doesn’t follow them.

Two quick things:
1. I was able to watch Tom & Jerry with Danny. A big deal, usually only Barbie can. Felt privileged. He even set up the cushions like he does for her.

2. Might have an issue with the dish-washing situation. I mentioned the bowls earlier, well after all our time at work, dance, and errands when I came back I noticed they were still there. Usually they are gone after awhile. I assume put away, clean, to be honest with you it’s usually not my concern I just put them in the dishwasher thing area. We added tonight’s new dirty dishes; I will keep an eye on it and check it in the morning.

Status: Overall a success. We will be fine.
