Suðurstrandarvegur, or Road 427 on the southern part of the Reykjanes peninsula, is gorgeous. I took it back to the airport on my last day in Iceland. It is a drive through lava fields, a coastline, a lighthouse, and abandoned buildings. I even saw – smelt first – a dead whale washed up on the rocks (not pictured below but in the full link).

I did not have much time to explore the area since I had a plane to catch, but the points I stopped at were incredible. On the road’s western end is where you will find the hiking trails to the most recent active volcanos.

My daughters and I were in Iceland for three days this spring. Clear days, around 5C air temp – our tour guides said we got the best weather. Such a strange and beautiful place, but never order pickled shark at a restaurant!
