the dailypic 5050 yr14 302 Dramatic Fagradalsfjall

Planned spontaneity led me back to Iceland. On July 4th the volcano at Fagradalsfjall erupted. There had been signs of it coming for weeks. I follow Icelandic news maybe more thoroughly than my own countries and have beem watching the live feed they set up, witnessing it grow over the last few weeks. Starting last week, I began thinking I could go see it. My calendar lined up, and some things fell into place, but there were plenty of reasons not to go too. First being I have a trip to Iceland planned in September with my wife. Second was the 20 KM round trip to hike to the Volcano. Third, I can find reasons not to do anything, I am really good at it.

Spoiler alert, I am in Iceland, landed yesterday at 8 am Icelandic time, got a crappy car, a great place to stay with my friend, and was at the Fagradalsfjall eruption mere yards away from the crater by 5 pm. The hike was long, 13 miles in one day – I am sure this is a record for me, at least as an out-of-shape (not as bad as I thought) adult. Not one complaint. The trip was worth the photos, more so the view. The majority of the time was just sitting from a distance, taking it all in, talking to people from all around the globe, and experiencing the planet’s growth—more from the day when I return with a better connection.
