thedailypic•Yr8•199/365•2756•Staff Sgt. Sanchez and the Patriot’s Day Runners

I have been taking photos on a regular basis since 1993, I have lived in the suburbs of Boston my whole life, I have never photographed the Boston Marathon. The closest I ever came to taking photos was in 1996, the 100th anniversary, but I ended up working a retail shift. I have always followed the race online or on TV, I wrote about what it meant to me when the bombing happened in 2013, you can read that blog here if interested, I was in NYC that day. Today I made it a point, I would photograph it.

I went to Ashland then walked around early looking for a good spot to catch the action. The corner of Main and Union, it let me see them all clearly approach, while having spectators in the background and I would be able to stay low and out of the way. And there I stayed for a few hours, taking it all in. Somewhere in between the wheelchairs came Staff Sgt. Jose Luis Sanchez, with space in front and space behind… he owned the street as he passed by. According to an NBC article you can read here, Sanchez is a retired Marine who lost the lower part of his left leg stepping on an IED in Afghanistan in 2011. I did not need the article to know he was running with a purpose, that flag looked heavy, in so many different ways. I was happy to read he inspired many people, on a day of inspiration. Then there was the man with Cerebral Palsy in the wheelchair, backwards, after some google searches I found he is “Backwards” Bill Reilly, 64 years old and he does this a lot, in an article I found from 4 years back they said he was running his 32nd!

Then add everyone else, there is enough inspiration to drive each of us for years. On my healthiest of days I can not run with my bad foot, but I can take photos. I need to do this more, photograph this event, I know there is no shortage of marathon photos, but it felt good to add mine to the mix. There were more moments with the camera down and I was just clapping, cheering for the participants, it seemed like the better thing to do at the time. If you want to see all the photos I took, you can see them by clicking here. Let me know if you know anyone, I would be happy to get them a file if they would like.

The last GOAT photo for awhile, but I really needed one more after the game.

I am not an autograph collector, but I do have a few Patriots signatures, Tony Eason, John Hannah, Steve Grogan, Drew Bledsoe, Dion Branch, Aaron Hernandez (yea, well) and Tom Brady. Some are worth more than others. Well, actually one is worth more than ALL the others together. Go Pats.

thedailypic•Yr8•122/365•2679•The GOAT & The Rally

I found myself at the New England Patriots Rally this morning, camera in hand, freezing in the cold and loving every minute of it. It was awesome, I think after the rally I was pumped enough, I could win a Super Bowl… I would have to limp to the bus… well, first I would have to go home and get my pills and cane, then drive back and limp to the bus… never mind, I will stick to photos. Though there was a moment when football and photos met. It was quick, but I shared a moment with TB12. I was at the side of the podium, Ty Law (future Hall of Famer corner Ty Law) was speaking to the crowd and Tom was in the back row. He reaches into his coat, pulls out his phone, gets the camera ready, then looks right at me. There was a little nod, and then he snaps a pic of the crowd. The look and nod, it was like, “Cool camera you got there limpy, look what I can do with this phone.” The GOAT. It does not matter what he is doing. You can see my whole set by clicking here, I am not sure where Tom’s photo end up. Some highlights below.

Nubble at Night
July 25, 2015

2 days ago we decided to to head to Maine for the weekend. Not like us, we are planners by nature, so this was a big deal. The decision led to… well, plans. What part, what would we do, all that stuff.  I had one request, I wanted to see the Nubble Lighthouse, I wanted to take a photo of it. I saw it once many years ago when I worked up here, but those days there was no dailypic, there was no camera in my hand. So, past that, I was good for anything. We set a course to Portland Head Light, that led us to 2 Lights, then Bug Light, then a Portland Harbor Cruise, then the most expensive dinner the 4 of us have ever had at the Lobster Cove in York – it was worth it. Then at 10pm, in complete darkness, I made it to Nubble Light, while the family was in a food coma in the car, I mounted the camera to the tripod, found the cable release, made my way by flashlight to the rocky shore across from the light. One test for focus, then one 4 minute, 30 second exposure later, I left with this shot. I consider the trip a success, and I still have another day to go. I added one more shot I got from the cruise of  Portland Head Light.

My Hat
February 1, 2015

On April 15th 2000, I went to a draft party at then, Foxboro Stadium, home of the NE Patriots. I bought this hat. At the same draft, a day later, the Patriots drafted Tom Brady. I tossed the hat in a pile of other hats when I got home and did not think about it for a while. It was baseball season, I had a Red Sox hat I wore most the time and that was it, until September 23, 2001. For whatever reason the family decided to go to Yankee Candle in Deerfield MA, even though the Pats game was on that afternoon. It was the home opener against the Jets. On the way out the door, I grab my never worn Pat Patriot hat and figured it was a good day to break it in. I listened to the game on the radio that day. Those who know the history of the team know that date. Drew Bledsoe, Mo Lewis, Tom Brady… we still lost that game, but that was not important. Now, I do not believe in luck, I don’t believe in a lot of things, but this is my hat.  I try to wear it each time the Patriots play. I lost it for 2 games once… I apologize. I did not wear it for the 2008 season opener, then Bernard Pollard… I am sorry. I am not jinxing anything by talking about the hat – many know about the hat, I get texts asking if it is on, we have lost plenty while wearing it, trust me it flew across a room February 3, 2008, a day we do not talk about. But it is my hat, it is falling apart, it smells horrible and is very sticky to touch, it will only get worse since I am afraid to wash it… but this is my hat as long as #12 is on the team.

Football Sunday
November 3, 2013

My son and I went to the Patriots game this afternoon. Dan had never been to a real game, I had an opportunity to pick up these tickets and it was awesome. The Red Sox were introduced right after the Pats came out of the tunnel. Lester carried the trophy to center field. Later the whole stadium serenaded Shane Victorino who acknowledge all of us from his box seats. Add to this a great win, and I can almost overlook the temperature… man was it cold up there on the roof of Gillette. Dan had a blast though, it was a great afternoon, I should regain feeling in my toes by the end of the week.
