After leaving the bison reserve, I headed east through southern Kansas. It was a quick stop in Chetopa. I parked right at the edge of downtown and walked the main street with my camera.
Even though it was a Wednesday late afternoon, only two businesses were open: the food shop and the drug store, which happens to be the only modern building on the strip. The drug store even has a drive-thru, and it looked like that was where all the heavy traffic in town was hiding out. Watching the people being driven through made me assume the town’s population of 929 leans toward the older side.
Turns out Chetopa is officially recognized as both the Pecan Capital and the Catfish Capital of Kansas. I managed to have neither while I was there.
Day Seven.
