In 1857 the 1/2 cent was taken out of circulation due to being useless.  Why today do we still have a penny? Hell, why do we have nickels? I went to make a purchase today, parking lots were crazy, lines in the store were 9 deep, finally get the coveted position of being ‘next’. Great, expect the women in front of me had to have one of ‘those transactions’. She was returning 6 things, I guess she had purchased more items, so it was not an even return, they owed her a penny. This brings the whole system to a halt. The cash draw was out of pennies, they can’t put a penny on a store card or debit card, she tried to refuse it but nope, they had to call the manager…. for a PENNY. I pride myself of using time wisely. It’s all math, come up with what you want to get done, add a value to the task and you can figure out a cost to a minute. When you look at it that way, it helps make decisions on what needs to be done. Trust me when I am done with this life I will be in the black on my time sheet. Now there I am trying to buy $10 worth of stuff, 10 minutes in the parking lot, 10 minutes in line, to get to ‘next’… then 5 minutes of penny talk, penny issues, penny resolution. 5 minutes, I know not a huge deal, we need patience, but still, over a penny? Is your time worth more than 15 cents an hour? That’s what that transaction cost me. Cost the store even more, cashiers getting say 25 cents a minute, manager who had to get the roll of pennies, maybe 40 cents a minute. So, the store lost at least $3.00 for a penny. That’s almost a 300% loss. Why are we putting up with these things? Where is the uproar on the cost it takes to make them? 1 cent is 1.67 cents to make?  So, roll that up, $167 to make $100, $1670 to make $1000, $1,670,000 to make $1,000,000. Come on. Forget about the time we waste with them, or the time you wasted reading this (I know no one reads this), so really the time I wasted writing it, tomorrow I need to be more efficient to make up for all of this. Why were we smarter in 1857?

Absolutely agree and some things just need to be ranted about regardless of cost.
