This morning Medway commemorated the 25th anniversary of 9/11. A somber day, but there are always moments of hope among the quiet. I am about to be 53. I was about to be 28 when it happened. Nearly half my life ago. There were people there today, some of them active members of either the fire or police department in my town, who were not even born yet. Even more were not old enough to remember the moments so many of us do.
We always say “Never Forget.” It has become the phrase attached to that tragic day. As important as that is, I think enough time has passed that there is another request we need to make: Learn to Remember. This little one was so excited to see the firefighters, the station, and the trucks. It was sweet to watch. I am sure he does not grasp what this day means yet, but I am also sure he will remember being there. The meaning can come later.
Those were some of the thoughts I had while documenting this morning. Thoughts that are now mixed with the ones I had sitting at a traffic light in Randolph, Massachusetts, listening to the events unfold on the radio 25 years ago.
All my photos from today here.
