To the Future
September 2, 2014
Every first day of school I see all the posts of all the kids dressed so nice, with the comments, “where has the time gone?”, or “I blinked and they are in x grade”. Though I understand the sentiment, I never feel that way. I look at them in this photo and think more about what is to come. I know how we got here, I know who they are, and I have been with them the whole trip. I am king of nostalgic, hell… I document my life so I can look back at things. I drive friends crazy with the random facts, or anniversaries I celebrate for no reason, but my kids are my time machines and they take me to the future. I see so much in them, and there is something about this time of year that makes it even louder. She has 2 more first day photos left. He has a year until High School. I don’t need things to slow down, I love seeing it all unfold. I enjoy it all, their future is awesome, and in my own way, I want to thank them for it each and every day. Check out the difference a year makes with last years photo below.

2013:

Well said my friend. It does go quickly but it is so amazing to watch them grow. I see my oldest step daughter and her struggles as a single mom of 2 amazing children and know that, she might not realize, she gets through it with lessons we taught her. I watch my 22 yr old step daughter cram planning a wedding and enlisting on the Navy for a March boot camp and just smile at the future she is lining up for herself. I see my 21 yr old daughter go through her love issues and always with a call to dad to say “I just cant do this” and with my witty humor and love I get her to a happier place. Yeah she still messes up but hey that’s growing. Then there is the boy, my partner in mayhem. I love the fact I was 40 when he was born. Sorry girls but it is so different. I love to watch him grow and so look forward to what his future will also bring. Right now its 2nd grade tomorrow and a new school building. I love to look back on theirs lives and cherish all those times. Laugh at some of the times that didn’t seem so funny at the time. Hahaha. But I also look to the future and am proud to say this is the clan that I have bestowed upon our great Earth.
