I made it to Vestahorn this morning, the reason I am on this quick trip to Iceland. I got there at dawn, it was covered in clouds – you couldn’t see an inch. I explored the area, and as the hours passed, it appeared. I spend most of the day there, early light, dark light, sunset, and even northern lights. I will be sharing all those later.

This photo came right after the sunset. This couple is from South Korea and got married at the mountain today. I was heading to the beach for one last look, and our paths crossed. They were with their wedding photographer, I asked if I could take a photo too. Wrong lens, no lighting, sun was gone, snow was falling, this is far from the best technical photo I have, BUT… it was so sweet to get to take a picture of a bride and groom while in Iceland. I am sure their pro has plenty of great photos for them. I was honored to be able to get one, too.

The destination of the Montana road trip was Going to the Sun Road in Glacier National Park. To gain access to the road, you need to win the lottery. 24 hours before you go, you can buy one of the remaining tickets for $2. They go on sale at 8 am and go fast. The day before we reached Glacier, we were sitting in the parking lot of a gas station refreshing websites as we watched the number drop from 921, 845, 710, 623, 489…. then somewhere in the low 100s, we got them. Safe to say, if we did not, the trip would have had a different feel, one of ‘we drove 3000k and did not get to the destination, and now we drive home knowing this.’ It all worked out, and we got our three-day pass. I was looking forward to the tunnels. There is one on the East and one on the West. The West one (above) has a great view of Clements Mountain. The one on the East has two windows carved out to look at the scenery.

A year ago I was preparing for a trip to Iceland. I left on March 1st came back on March 11th. I left without a clue about COVID, came back to a whole different world. I barely got off the island, and the world closes down behind me.

My trip never got its last breath. There is that ‘after vacation glow’ most big trips get. This breath was stolen. I got off the plane, the next day I was taking calls about canceling weddings, events, sessions. Not sure where my kids would be going to school, told to stay in my house, wiping groceries. Iceland was the furthest thing from my mind, and if I had the chance to think about it I would have said it hurt since the trip itself was incredible, to a place I love. So I let the photos sit, ignoring them but knowing they were there.

Last month I started working on the new photo site, I realized they need to be included. Tossed up a coming soon sign with no plan past that. This past weekend I sat with them all, showed them to my wife for the first time Saturday night, got excited about them again. Sunday I went through the whole trip from day one to day ten. Culled, edited, and published. Might be the longest I ever have waited to go through photos – I am a person who shares each day, so 11 months seems a tad late. The rain went away, so we went for a hike, 1785′ up to the peak of Mt. Major in Alton, Nh. Great hike, awesome view, perfect day. Anna used the opportunity to display some dance moves. I would have too, but the 90min hike had left me winded.
