A view over the town at dusk before the storm. Might look a bit different tomorrow night.

Escaped for one night to Littleton, NH. Not going to lie, it was nice to get away, but it is 2020 everywhere. Businesses I have known for years, closed, places I used to enjoy going to off the path, now as if they are on the highway. Volumes of people, like me, looking to get away. The highlight of the trip (which do not get me wrong was a pleasant time away with my wife) was shooting the Milky Way. This is easier than ever due to technology and apps, but I have never done it. A couple of youtube videos, a random drive to find the darkest spot – turns out that is north of Littleon on a dirt road named Broomstick Hill Rd – what seems to be millions of stars and no one for miles and here we have my first venture into Milky Way photography. The core was a little low on the horizon, but the random, pitch-black field we found allowed us to see it with our naked eye, though it takes a 13-30 second exposure to pull it out as you see in these photos. I look forward to playing with this again, looking for a complimentary subject to place it with.

I’ve wanted to shoot a series like this for years, last year I reached out to Medway Fire Department to see if they wanted to be involved. Not only did they want to be part of it, but they also invited me up to the station to shoot it. Steel wool, stainless steel whisks, chain and a willing subject, dressed for safety shot with a wide angle lens and long exposures. After weeks of delays due to rain, we finally had a night that worked. We had hecklers yelling America! as they drove by, I am sure it was a sight to see with the station being at the intersections of two main roads. Thanks to Lieutenant Tracy for partnering with me on this and Firefighter Lennon for spinning like a pro.

According to my watch I walked over 15 miles in the last three days. Impressive since the majority of that time I was in a 22×24 box. I built two cabinets, cleaned and organized, sorted, purged, decorated and just really made my new studio my own this weekend. It is almost done, a few minor things to finish up, most everything is put in its place with the new cabinets filling up quickly. I found an old prop I used to use for a photography class I had at the old place a few times. We would end the course with the students making this image, so I figured why not break it out for the dailypic. I will be starting to schedule classes in the upcoming weeks, and I have begun The We Are Medway Project up again, tune in tomorrow for those photos, and will be holding an open house at the barn March 2nd. The end of construction is in sight, and the new space is perfect, here is a 360 version of it below, kind of MC Escher feel.

Tonight the Medway Library Photograph Group OH SHOOT! met at Thayer House and photographed light spinning. Thanks to Elizabeth for demoing the art in the cold.

So, I said I would try again, here it is. Third time is the key (though, I will admit I am trying one more time tonight). Less clouds, kicked it off with some light still in the sky, raised the view and took a longer series. The right side is darker, I had a moon in the sky the last time, but I love the colors. I also took one with a different view in the middle of the night, no lake, but more stars. You can even see some ‘non-star’ movement going in other directions, there is a red line going thru the middle almost North to South.

Not the dramatic look I was going for with star trails. I had tried a new method and to be honest, screwed it all up the night before. The night that had NO clouds and was perfect with TONS of visible stars. I tried again last night, this time it worked, but fewer stars and overcast toned it all down. I will give it another try if the sky clears before we leave. This series was taken over 2 hours in the dark with some ambient light sneaking in… also sneaking in was a visitor. A deer showed up in the photos about 3/4’s the way through. Since this is many photos stacked over each other, with each one being 30 seconds long, it is tough to catch anything that moves, but this deer posed for a reasonable amount of time dead center. Only moving its head blurring their face for privacy. Too bad it would have been a perfect shot all by itself.

OK, first for those that follow everyday, I am sorry… I made it a week in black and white, not a month. The dailypic is alive to me, it is black and white when it wants to be. I felt I was forcing it, so back to color until it tells me otherwise. Now, on to these shots, I needed to go for a walk tonight so why not go be creepy and stand on the side of the road with a camera and a tripod. Three shots, 3 minute exposures each. Just some fun light streaks or Main Street and its travelers.

Thank you to all who came out to the first Open House Night at the Tim Rice Photo Studio. We will do it again soon.
