Today was Medway’s Bag Hunger event. Last weekend every house in town was given a grocery bag and asked to fill it with non-perishable food items and leave it in front of their home. Today a crew of volunteers went around, picked them up, and brought them to one of two spots where even more volunteers unbagged and sorted the items. Last year they collected 20K LBS of food. An unbelievable event to support Medway food pantries.

Driving to my last photo session of the year (more on that in a day or two), the roads were full of fog. A stop on the side of the road and a quick photo, and here we are, the last dailypic of 2021.

No one owns the years, especially the last few. I could complain, but why? I could celebrate, but again why? We are all on the same road, moving forward. There is a pavement beneath us, a direction ahead and just off in the distance unseen opportunity in the fog. Behind is the only thing known to me. Behind me, this year is a lot of change. Where that change takes me, I am not sure. I choose to believe it is all positive, and it is definitely in that fog for me to find.

Many believe photography and Tim Rice Photo is my full-time job. That perception was by design, and I choose to live as I want to be known. A photographer is what I am, no matter what else I may do. Though behind the scenes, there was another career. Another full-time job, a corporate one, well that chapter ended a few weeks back, a corporate lay off just in time for the holidays. Please know, I am not looking for sympathy. The relationship was not the best, to say the least – we both had our faults, and I firmly believe things can be improved by ending, but as the year closes out, it is hard to ignore it left a mark on the months.

Why share this now? It was not planned. I have avoided saying anything about losing a job no one knew I had, but it was the fog, the road, the 31st, the unknown in the coming mist as I headed to that photo session. Past that fog is school, daycare, sports photos, product photography, corporate headshots, travel photography, real estate work, in addition to the client base and workload I have built over the many years.

Like so many, 2022 will be my fog. I am going into it full speed, with plans and new goals. On a road I have built and am proud of. I will continue to do some of the work done with the other job, but this time on my terms as a contractor, as a supplement to the life I will lead as a true full-time photographer. So much more to come.

One the screen is dailypic number one, taken 10/1/09, 3501 days ago, that is 500 weeks ago, nine years and seven months ago. Not sure if anyone was around from back when this started. A daily photo posted only on facebook from Ocrtober 1st to October 31st, 2009.  That was the plan… now 3500 plus days in a row, emailed out to subscribers, put on facebook, twitter, linked in, MyFm 101.3, and soon to be (maybe), a (possible) Tim Rice Photo app.  We are heading to ten years complete at the end of September. The short story of why I do this for those who might not know is, I stopped taking photos for a bit. I love photography, have since I was young, first real camera at 19 and I was off. Went to school for it, owned a One Hour Photo Lab, worked for Kodak, and then digital showed up and the world as we knew it changed. I was slow to adapt and stepped away for a few years. To force me to pick up again – this time as a digital photographer, the dailypic for that month of October was born. I never stopped, and here we are.  I look forward to saying tens years completed come October 1. I am pretty sure it will live on after that, for now, small goals, I promise you at least 151 more photos, then we can discuss it again. Thanks for looking.
