I took a field trip today. My daughter and I visited the Robert Frank and Todd Webb: Across America, 1955 exhibit at the Addison Gallery of America Art in Andover, MA. Robert Frank is one of my favorite photographers. His book The Americans is stunning. It features gritty, real photos documenting the US in the 1950s. He has inspired me over the years, so when a friend told me about the show, I had to see it before it ended this month.

The exhibit included not only his work but also the work of Todd Webb, a photographer I was not as familiar with but who might be one of my newest favorites after today. Seeing both these photographers’ work in one place is a brilliant marriage. You can read all about it here.

I have been planning a photo project for almost five years, inspired by Frank’s journey across America in 1955. The closest I came was during Covid, but I could not make it work. The goal was to drive to the Middle of the country – Lebanon, Kansas, and document the journey through my camera. Anna and I talked about the trip on the way to the exhibit. So when she saw the photo named ‘Half Way, Kinsley, KS,’ by Webb, not Frank, she had to point it out to me. Turns out I might have a new inspiration to get this trip done. At the very least, I believe a black-and-white phase is about to start.

It looks like a great photo fest! Quality Black and white images are always impressive.
